Seminary of the Southwest

History

Established in 1952 by the Rt. Rev. John Elbridge Hines, the fourth Bishop of Texas and eventual Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church, Seminary of the Southwest was born from the need to educate more Episcopal priests during a period of rapid postwar growth in The Episcopal Church. Bishop Hines’ vision was expansive: he sought to create a seminary for “the whole church … centered around dialogue between the Christian faith and culture.”

Tuition and Financial Aid

  • Full-time students: $18,768 per year.
  • Part-time students: $1,173 per credit hour for MDiv, MAR, and DAS programs; $782 per credit hour for MHC and MSD programs.

Additional fees include a mandatory lunch plan for daytime students at $1,232 per year and a student services fee of $955 per year for full-time students. The seminary offers substantial financial aid, including need-based grants covering up to 100% of tuition for eligible students.
